The Bassoon is a “double reed instrument” (as is oboe). It creates sound when the double reed vibrates between the lips.
Physical Characteristics
A slight overbite is actually great for bassoon. A wide hand span and agile thumbs are necessary to navigate the bassoon’s unique fingering system.
Other Considerations
Due to the nature of the instrument, bassoonists are strongly encouraged to take private lessons. Bassoon reeds need regular adjusting by a professional (eventually, you learn to make your own!). See the directors for a list of bassoon teachers. To offset the cost of lessons, we provide school-owned bassoons. This instrument is for conscientious, detail-oriented students.
